"The trip far exceeded our already high expectations. Abdullah was an exceptional guide, keeping the conversation animated throughout the trip. We learned so much about Berber culture and the life of the desert nomads from him. This made all the sites we visited that much more interesting – from the mountain villages and kasbahs to the desert dunes.
Many thanks for your assistance beforehand in tailoring the trip to our interests. Barely a day went by without some musical encounter. We enjoyed watching the impromptu Berber dance session after dinner at our Dades hotel. We joined in with the drumming on the Sahara, getting a few pointers from our camel guide Mustafa. The Gnaoua musicians in Merzouga were particularly interesting – Abdullah told us that he had gone to them once for a musical “healing”. We enjoyed our lunch to the accompaniment of the oud and drum ensemble in Zagora. Meeting the rais poet/rebab player in Ouarzazate was a definite highlight and I look forward to transcribing my interview with him from the French. I only wish I could speak Amazighe so as to appreciate all the improvised poetry he sang to us over dinner!
Visiting the prehistoric rock art sites at Ait Ouazik and Foum Chenna added a whole other dimension to the trip, taking us back 3000-6000 years to a time when the now parched landscape was filled with lush vegetation. One site had images of gazelles, giraffes, ostriches, elephants and rhinos. The other site was filled with hundreds of figures of horsemen with shields and spears. There were also inscriptions in the ancient Berber alphabet, of which Abdullah recognized some of the characters but none of the words. Adding the rock art sites to our itinerary had the pleasant side effect of a night at the wonderful Ksar in Nkob, where the accommodations, dinner and shower were outstanding.
It was on the advice of a previous “Authentic Morocco” traveler that we opted to add an extra day to take in village life in the picturesque mountain village of Telouet. I would strongly urge others to do the same, if only to get to know the family that runs “La Maison Berbere Nomade”. Ali and his cousin Rachid were charming hosts, full of fun. Their mothers taught Connie Berber dancing while the rest of us drummed on tam tams. Rachid insisted I learn how to eat couscous in traditional Berber style - something I would definitely not do at home. His cousin Khalid is a wealth of knowledge about carpets. It’s well worth a visit to the carpet shop there to get his presentation, especially about the symbols in the wedding rugs. But it’s hard to leave without wanting to bring one home (we now have a beautiful carpet adding some Moroccan colors to our den.)
To sum up, “Authentic Morocco” really lived up to its name. Thanks for helping us to fall in love with the land and its people!
